A community focused animation education resource.

Animation for Anyone aims to be a free online resource designed to teach anyone how to start animating. Whether you’re an illustrator, kindergarten teacher or boiler maker, there should be something here to help you learn how to begin your animation journey.

Hi! I’m Alex Grigg, an animator and director with over 15 years experience in the animation industry. My ultimate goal for Animation for Anyone to be free to use, and as approachable as possible. It does not aim to create master animators but offer a solid foundation for those that are excited about how to make things move.

You may be interested in pursuing your animation journey further than the classes here can cater for, and in that case I encourage you to check out some of my deep dive classes here.

What’s all this then?

Animation for Anyone aims to be a free online resource designed to teach anyone how to start animating. Whether you’re an illustrator, kindergarten teacher or boiler maker, there should be something here to help you learn how to begin your animation journey.

I’m in the early stages of building the lessons. If you’d like to be updated on their progress you can leave your details above and you’ll get an email you as soon as we have something to share.

My ultimate goal here if for Animation for Anyone to be free to use, and as approachable as possible. It does not aim to create master animators but offer a solid foundation for those that are excited about how to make things move.

“The plan here is to create a series of easy to understand films that slowly build a fundamental understanding of animation. ”

— NADIA Shabazz, FOUNDER

The Approach

Because animation uses a set of principles that are tightly interconnected people new to animation can easily get lost trying to combine them all before they’re ready. The course will build connections between the core ideas in a logical way, letting students build an intuitive understanding of each concept and when to consider it in the planning process.

The core of Animation for Anyone will be lessons lessons that are short and sweet. They wont focus on specific software packages or mediums. Alongside the fundamentals lessons will be supplemental lessons hoping to bridge the gap between theory and practice.

Community

This is a community focused project. Its important for me to acknowledge that it hopes to serve more than one community. Its primary goal is to serve ‘the community’ in a general sense, in that it aims to open to people from as many backgrounds and interests as possible. It will also serve the creative community, whether bridging creative skills or adding to existing animation experience.

I want to involve the community in the making of Animation for Anyone as much as possible, whether through trailing the resources, creating assets or simply by asking for small donations to help me commission original work for the site. This is a first for me, so bear with me while I fine tune how this will work. There may be a Patreon in the future, or maybe something else similar. Let see how this first fundraiser goes!

A little about me…

My name is Alex Grigg. I’m an animator and filmmaker from Australia. I’ve been working in the animation industry for a little over 10 years. I’ve done a bit of everything, from 3D animation, hand drawn animation to direction. I’ve worked on computer games, feature films, VR, music videos and advertising. I also help run the Community animation event Loopdeloop in London and create films with the Late Night Work Club collective.
